"White elephant" nghĩa là gì?

Là sao ta??? Photo courtesy: Wim Schaut

"White elephant" = voi trắng -> vật vô dụng, gây phiền toái, tốn rất nhiều tiền nhưng không thể bỏ được.

Ví dụ
The dam has become something of a white elephant.

The theory behind using older but proven technology was that it would ensure that the SLS could be developed quickly and cheaply. However, reality has not proven the theory to be correct. Ten years later, with NASA once again headed back to the moon, the space agency is stuck with a white elephant of a big rocket.

It had been a great opportunity to see how end-products are getting put together. Now, with disruption (gãy vỡ) of the transport links along the supply chains, one gets to see where the logistical bottlenecks (nút thắt cổ chai) lie and how disruptive it actually can be. A large containership, as efficient as it can be when fully laden (chất hàng), can very easily turn into a “white elephant” just by virtue (bởi vì) of another link of the intermodal transport chain being affected.

"Wouldn't hurt a fly" nghĩa là gì?

Thấy chưa, tui hiền lắm! Photo courtesy: Sherry Aldrich Sineath

"Wouldn't hurt a fly" = không giết cả một con ruồi -> rất hiền và không muốn làm hại người khác.

Ví dụ
Everybody is afraid of my dog because he is a pit bull but he’s so gentle he wouldn’t hurt a fly.

Are you the kind of person who wouldn't hurt a fly? Is your motto "live and let live," even when it comes to tiny, six-legged, uninvited house guests? Then the Katcha Bug Humane Bug Catcher is for you!

Based on a manga by Paru Itagaki, Beastars focuses on Legosi, a gray wolf, and his high school life. The day to day (ngày qua ngày) takes a turn for the dramatic when a carnivorous (động vật ăn thịt) student eats an alpaca at school. Tensions rise between the carnivores and the herbivores (ăn cỏ), as the latter see the former as monsters and the former are tired of the prejudice against them. Legosi, being a huge and menacing (đe dọa)-looking wolf, is looked at in fear by all the other students. His close peers know that he wouldn’t hurt a fly.

"Take an axe to" nghĩa là gì?

Hey, hey, Dance with me Photo by Godisable Jacob from Pexels

'Take an axe to' = phá hủy hoặc cố gắng hủy hoại thứ gì, thường là những thứ vô hình.

Ví dụ
Probably, the ‘bigger’ personal finance event of the week (share price slides, notwithstanding) was the Bank of England’s decision to take an axe to interest rates.

The growing spectre of coronavirus, an illness currently knocking on every country’s door (and waltzing (ghé qua) past the threshold of many), has led Moody’s Investor Service to take an axe to global car sales projections.

The overwhelming majority of the labour movement (phong trào lao động) is utterly opposed to this Tory Brexit. This because it will destroy jobs by taking us outside the customs unions and will take an axe to workers’ rights in a race to the bottom with working conditions in Trump’s America, as well as by removing environmental protections and food standards.

"Curate's egg" nghĩa là gì?

Sách dù hay đến mấy thì vẫn có người không thích đọc mà thôi. Photo by Lum3n.com from Pexels

"The/a curate's egg" nghĩa là cái có cả hai mặt tốt và xấu. Cụm từ xuất phát từ tranh tiếu lâm trên một tờ báo Anh, kể về một "curate" (cha phó) ngồi ăn với mục sư trưởng, anh ta được mang ra một quả trứng hỏng nhưng vẫn ăn vì không muốn làm xúc phạm đến ai, anh ta đã nói "good in parts" (vẫn còn những phần ngon).

Ví dụ
Despite its visual strengths (thế mạnh thị giác)—and it has plenty—this new production is a curate’s egg.

Investors' response (phản ứng) to Xero's first-half results was unambiguously (rõ ràng) positive despite it being a bit of a curate's egg.

Mieko Kawakami’s 'Breasts and Eggs' is a true novel (tiểu thuyết) of two halves and is (excuse the pun (chơi chữ)) a bit of a curate’s egg.

Brosnan starred in two terrible (tệ) Bond films. It makes a solid argument for itself as the worst Bond film ever made, which is some accomplishment (thành tựu) in a franchise (nhượng quyền) that includes Diamonds Are Forever and The Man with the Golden Gun. In contrast, 'The World Is Not Enough' is merely a curate’s egg of a film.

"The same fire that melts the butter hardens the egg" = cùng là ngọn lửa làm chảy bơ nhưng lại làm cứng quả trứng -> trải qua cùng một sự kiện nhưng phản ứng của mổi người lại khác nhau.

Ví dụ
Constitutions (hiến pháp) affect the impact of environment. What we learn and how well we learn it depends on constitution...The fire that melts the butter hardens the egg.

Each woman, in her unique circumstances (hoàn cảnh) and with her unique personality, experienced a historical event from a different angle and, therefor, appraised (đánh giá) the same event idiosyncratically (cách biểu hiện riêng). These differences in response support the old aphorism (cách ngôn), that “the same fire that melts the butter hardens the egg.”

In summing up the effects of life events on individuals (cá nhân), the grand old man of personality theory (lý thuyết), Gordon Allport, is reported to have said, “The same fire that melts the butter, hardens the egg.” This statement puts individual differences in temperament (tính khí) at the center of any attempts to understand the behavior of an individual who is confronted with adversity (đối mặt với nghịch cảnh).

'Give one the ax(e)' = sa thải; li hôn.

Ví dụ
No matter what they're motivation (động cơ), they're probably at best a brown noser (kẻ nịnh bợ) and at worst a huge pile of drama. Just give them the ax now and make life easier for everyone.

According to Baton Rouge's The Advocate, there was much speculation (suy đoán) surrounding the future of "The Mad Hatter" as head coach leading up to today prior to LSU's Vice Chancellor and athletic director Joe Alleva ultimately deciding to give him the ax. The Tigers offensive coordinator Cam Cameron was fired as well.

Both VH1 and higher-ups (người quyền cao chức trọng, người ở vị trí cao) were reportedly upset when they found out what he had done and made the executive decision to give him the ax. "That's not the brand that VH1 nor the franchise wants to have," the source said. "They had to fire him. If anything had happened to Nia, they would have felt partially responsible for not intervening (can thiệp)."

I knew one Bett Stubbs of our town, that was married in red; and, as sure as eggs is eggs, the bridegroom and she had a miff (giận dỗi) before morning.

As sure as eggs are eggs, someone will sooner or later try to get airborne (hành quân không vận) with it turned off. Ensure that there is a club philosophy (triết lý) that every pilot is aware of.

A boy scout (hướng đạo sinh) or girl guide, set a challenge to ascertain (xác định) if the sprig (cành con) were whole or had suffered a tiny depredation (phá phách), would have failed, I am sure, as sure as eggs is eggs.

As soon as she saw him at some distance, “David,” cried she, “as sure as eggs are eggs,” (unpinning her white apron, and smoothing it nicely down as she spoke) “this young Lort wants to have our company, that he may find out something about Miss Amanda".

"A bad egg" hoặc "rotten egg" = quả trứng thối -> kẻ xấu, thành viên bất hảo, kẻ phá hoại tổ chức/ làm hại người khác, người bị coi là thiếu chân thực và không tin cậy được. Ngược lại là "good egg", một người đáng tin cậy.

Ví dụ
The two dated for a while but he proved time and time again to be a bad egg. He made comments about her weight, about not seeing a future with her, and he even ended up cheating on (lừa dối) her.

“I feel like one bad egg shouldn’t spoil (cướp phá) a person’s whole work,” says Walters. “We just have to be careful who we attach things to. There’s a lot more complicated reasons why things are happening and people are acting the way they are and it’s usually not to do with films or computer games or posters”.

The plotlines (cốt truyện) were outrageous (thái quá)- like the time chief WAG Tanya Turner (Zoe Lucker) decided to 'sh*g' the manager of Premier League club Earls Park FC to death. Or when Chardonnay (Susie Amy) let rotten egg Jason Turner (Cristian Solimeno) plunge to his death after he rejected his son Paddy for being born an hemaphroite (lưỡng tính).

"What's that got to do with the price of eggs?"

“What the hell's that got to do with the price of eggs, baby?” He stood naked before her. “Hell, if I hadn't liked fighting so much, I could have been a porn star. Made millions.”

'Please don't think this insensitive (vô cảm), Phil, but was it after that business in Afghanistan that your marriage started going wrong?' I blinked (chớp mắt), hardly believing what I was being asked. 'What's that got to do with the price of eggs?' I retorted (vặn lại).

"I don't have a bloody church." It surprised her to hear her father's voice jumping from her mouth. "The newspaper sometimes get it rights. Politicians (chính trị gia) lie, most of them. But what's that got to do with the price of bloody eggs? And why, damnit, can't I see you, straight out?"

Joe and Rico are a pair of desperate (tuyệt vọng) characters both trying to make a living and also wanting something speacial out of life. Joe hears some of Rico's big talk, but then asks, “What's that got to do with the price of eggs?" Rico's got it all figured out. "Shoot first and argue afterwards."

"Egg-sucker" nghĩa là gì?

Dù ai nói ngả nói nghiêng, Trump vẫn là Trump Photo by Gage Skidmore

"Egg-sucker" nghĩa là kẻ xu nịnh, bợ đỡ, thảo mai.

Ví dụ
As Jacob says, "You couldn't grow a toenail on Hartley's land." One morning, Jacob and Edna spot the Hartleys and their hound dog walking down a nearby trail (đường mòn) for their twice-weekly trip to town. Edna yells: "That hound of yours ... is it an egg-sucker?"

Pretty sure this writer is garbage (rác rưởi), but I would like to point out that I fully believe Tennessee’s blue tick hound (chó săn, kẻ đê tiện) is an egg-sucker. That’s the only huntin’-dog related insult I can think of that doesn’t involve trashing (phá hoại) his tracking skills.

She’s denounced Trump as a white supremacist (người ủng hộ thuyết cho rằng người da trắng là ưu việt), racist, scumbag (cặn bã), maniac (điên), Russia-coddling, womanizing, xenophobic (bài ngoại), homophobic (kỳ thị đồng tính), Islamophobic (định kiến với Hồi giáo), global-warming, fascist, corrupt, tax-evading, environment-despoiling, child-abusing, Nazi egg-sucker.

"Egg in (one's) beer" = trứng trong bia -> quà tặng, ưu đãi, phần thưởng không cần thiết hoặc thừa thãi.

Ví dụ
Fear flooded his body as he tried to breathe and relax. Calm down, don't be an old fart about it. Tell it to the chaplain (giáo sĩ). Whaddy want, egg in your beer?

"What's wrong with that?" Alex responded.
"It's kid stuff, money," the younger Gipp replied.
"What do you want? Egg in your beer?” retorted (vặn lại) an increasingly perturbed (rối tung) Alex Gipp.

Conversations and discussions were equally highly spirited (hung hăng), and I foolishly (dại dột) made a remark (bình luận) about something that I didn't like about this country, to which Aunt Astrid ojected (phản chối) and vehemently (kịch liệt) disagreed and responded, "Well! Photo by maitree rimthong from Pexels

"(Butter and) egg money = tiền bơ và trứng -> tiền mà người làm nông có được để dành cho lúc mưa gió hay bệnh hoạn, thường là của các bà mẹ lượm trứng gà và vắt sữa bò để làm bơ.

Ví dụ
For weeks after he brought that wretched (không may), black orb (quả cầu) home, purchased with the butter and egg money Verdel had tucked away (cất, giấu) in the gravy boat (bát đựng sốt) up on the high shelf of the cupboard, she'd put her foot down.

"Adulterous behavior" nghĩa là gì?

"Adulterous behavior" nghĩa là hành vi ngoại tình, không chung thủy.

Ví dụ
Furthermore, if the spouses (vợ chồng) live apart on amicable terms, claims for “expenses” are not made. When a spouse reluctantly moves out after discovering adulterous behavior, however, the cheating spouse is exposed to such a claim.

While Josh put on a happy face when he walked down the aisle, it would seem as though the now 31-year-old was nowhere near ready to settle down. He was outed as a serial cheater, and while he claims to have corrected his adulterous behavior, many followers believe he’s still up to his old tricks.

Adultery with an opposite-sex partner means husband and wife will not have to wait to obtain a divorce. If Mr. Legally Separated's wife pleads and proves adultery, divorce can be granted immediately. His adultery may be a factor in determining whether his wife has the right to alimony (tiền cấp dưỡng cho vợ) and in awarding custody (sự chăm sóc) of the children, if the judge determines that his adulterous behavior had a detrimental effect on them.

"Egg-head" nghĩa là gì?

Chả hiểu sao lại chế giễu người thông minh? Photo by Christina Morillo from Pexels

"Egg-head" = đầu trứng -> người thông minh, có khả năng trong lĩnh vực học thuật, siêng năng, thích học. “Egg head” theo nghĩa đen là đầu giống hình quả trứng, ý chỉ những người có phần đầu to ở phía trên, kích thước não lớn.

Ví dụ
Labeling super-smart people with terms like nerd (mọt sách), geek (khùng), egghead or boffin (nhà nghiên cứu) is hate speech, and should be punishable (trừng phạt) as such, argues lecturer (giảng viên) and Harley-Street psychotherapist (nhà tâm lý trị liệu) Dr Sonja Falck.

If you look up the term egghead in the dictionary you find this: “an intellectual (trí thức); a very studious (ham học) and academic person” or more to the point: often used before another noun “a bunch of egghead scientists” The term was meant to be somewhat insulting (xúc phạm).

Egghead is a technological genius (thiên tài công nghệ) but despite this high technological intelligence, he had no more than average strategic talents (tài năng chiến lược), a self-sabotaging (tự phá hoại) level of impatience (thiếu kiên nhẫn), and repeatedly demonstrated a need for external validation (phê chuẩn).

Because a certain percentage of heavy oil has to be mixed with our predominant (nhiều khả năng, chiếm ưu thế hơn) LTO in order for the old refineries to handle the feedstock. Meridian Energy had plans to build the Davis Refinery in North Dakota and a similar but larger refinery near Kermit, Texas exclusively for LTO. I don't know the status of those. MbS has gotten his tit in a wringer on this one. Trump let him get by with Khashhogi. Putin is now really upset about this new shale gas field that Mo has proposed. Putin can outlast the KSA. "September is magic mushroom month. A successful ‘shroom’ hunt is evidenced by the general weirdness of the graffiti that appears and the haunted looks in the eyes of c***s and chavettes as they try to pretend they feel cool when they really feel like hell. This is a great time to get your own back on them and spreading paranoia (hoang tưởng đoán nhận) filled rumours about a large influx (sự tràn vào, ảnh hưởng) of “drug police in plain clothes” and “new tech stuff that can detect mushrooms on your breath from 50 feet away” is a great sport."

"Get (one's) number" = Có được số điện thoại của ai nhất là khi bắt đầu thích thú hay muốn theo đuổi đối phương; biết, hiểu được ai/cái gì để lường trước điều họ sẽ làm.

Ví dụ
Sharing the bizarre (kỳ quái, kỳ lạ) incident on Twitter, she wrote: 'A few months back an ice cream man told me he'd give me and all my pals free ice cream if he could get my number, we thought it was a fair trade, I took one for the team. We've had no contact since and I woke up to this today...'

Victoria travelled to Manchester the following week and they spoke for the first time and kept a memento (vật kỷ niệm) from the day. ‘She’d had a couple of drinks so I decided why not, I’ll try and get her number,’ the 44-year-old continued. ‘We talked for about an hour in the players’ lounge. She actually got the train up that day so she wrote her number down on her train ticket, which I still have.’

Randy Goodrum, the guy who wrote “You Needed Me,” had grown up playing jazz piano in Hot Springs, Arkansas. In high school, he was in a trio (bộ ba) with his friend Bill Clinton. Goodrum served in the Army and played piano in the Army band, and he eventually moved to Nashville, where he found work as a session pianist and part-time songwriter. He wrote “You Needed Me” for his wife, and he was bummed when she thought that the song was merely OK. Whenever he played it for people, they told him that it needed a chorus. He never gave it one. Eventually, though, Anne Murray found the song while digging through a box of demo tapes. Goodrum’s tape only had his name on it — no contact info — so Murray’s producer Jim Ed Norman, figuring that maybe Goodrum lived in Nashville, had to call local information to get his number.

Auburn Hills, Mich., May 7, 2007 - For moms who prefer metal that moves over metal that adorns, stop by the Walter P. You can only drive so many luxury cars and observe so many alien autopsies before you begin to crave the purest and most universal pleasure known to man. We're talking, of course, about enjoying the company of the Mother of Dragons herself, Emilia Clarke. Ví dụ
Sir Alex Ferguson once again led the way at this particular stage, yet unlike the previous season the Scot was unable to get his mitts on the title. Instead it was Roberto Mancini who soared Man City to their maiden Premier League gong in dramatic fashion.

Of course, we don’t want him to buy the NHS at all; but he could at least have the good grace to say that he wished to get his mitts on it so that the Left can scream abuse at him and his chief fence Boris Johnson. Now all they can do is attack him for being rude about it. Typical Trump. He can’t even be relied upon to play his role as demon-in-chief properly.

Glenn Close is back as the deliciously evil Cruella de Vil. Out on the prowl again after a spell in prison, de Vil is supposedly “cured” from her partiality for animal cruelty. "Get (one's) jollies" = Tìm kiếm những cuộc vui chơi, tận hưởng và làm thỏa mãn mọi nhu cầu bản thân hết sức.

Ví dụ
You're going to have to get your jollies off elsewhere because sadly, Playboy magazine is closing down. Look, it shouldn't be too hard considering the vast amount of XXX content available online these days, but lest we forget the pioneer of ~naughty~ centrefolds.

This spot is for the bold, not the faint of heart. If you get your jollies from gazing at the sea of parachutes (cái dù) that take over the sky, then Superstore is for you. Since the plane’s flight path usually falls over or near Superstore, it’s likely you’ll be joined by waves of enemies looking to test their aim and warm up. You likely won’t be able to complete many Contracts unless you take all your adversaries out. But the money and loot you’ll pick up from killing them are well worth it. Plus, there are several neighboring towns and compounds you can visit on your way to the ring.

Lola is one of the most obnoxious (đáng ghét, ghê tởm) characters on the show. As we get to know her it becomes clear that a lot of her irritating tendencies stem from her raw emotional state. The Shame Wizard refers to her as the world's saddest girl. She may not win our hearts but she at least deserves our sympathy. Her tragic home life makes what Andrew did to her that much worse. Through the mysteries of middle school pressure, Andrew finds himself dating Lola. It doesn't take long for him to realize that she's not really the one. Despite not really liking her all that much, Andrew still chooses to use her to get his jollies. We hate to see such a fragile young lady used for his sick urges.

"Get (one's) groove (rãnh, kẽ) on" = Nhảy múa và tận hưởng.

Ví dụ
Growing up, the Minnesota Ballet veteran was “quite awkward. It took me a while to get my groove on. When I told my parents I was going to school for ballet, they were shocked. I told them, ‘If I want to be a triple threat,’” he needed the experience.

While festivals and concerts around the world are being cancelled and postponed (Bluesfest, Dark Mofo, gigs at the Sydney Opera House and Splendour in the Grass to name a few), a bunch of Sydney mates have created their own virtual gig: Room 2 Radio. Dubbed Sydney's first online nightclub, this party is letting you get your groove on even if you're stuck at home.

It's all right there in the lyrics! Work it harder, Make it better, Do it faster, Makes us stronger I like all the remixes and covers too. I make sure I listen to it BEFORE I get started working. I do a lot of writing, so after I get my groove on, I switch to instrumentals. Which does include a lot more Daft Punk and DeadMau5. It works really well for getting into a new blog post where I really want to encourage and inspire other people.

I had an uncle who lived in Forest Lake who told me I could come live with his family until I get my feet on the ground. That’s what brought me to Minnesota. I interviewed all over the place and chose Coldwell Banker Burnett at the time, which was in Eden Prairie.

It takes a while to get your feet on the ground and have an understanding of how things work in the county and government. The more experience you have, the better you can be at it. That’s why I went to commissioners court a year before I took office, and I continue to learn how to be better.

“Because most of my research is centered on Ireland, I spend as much time there as I can,” said Eamonn Wall. “You can only learn so much from books and the internet. "Get/have (one's) end away/get your leg over" = Làm tình.

Ví dụ
YES, can I just say literally the first note I made while watching was how about the face on Arya when she saw Gendry! I feel weird willing them to bang because are they 12? But also in a very real way, please for the love of all that is good and holy, get your leg over, please.

Incidentally, chaps, if you want to get your end away in this modern world when most girls don’t want to know because they think they’re feminists and they think you’re all rapists, this invaluable Channel 4 social experiment offered some very helpful pointers. Either a) be a vet and be seen palpably caring about animal welfare or b) be a chef and pay especial attention to the blonde veggie females in your midst with choice non-meat titbits: those are your two best options for pulling hotties.

What on earth is going on? I suppose it’s not so surprising, on reflection. The kids of today are all online, with a significant chunk of them spending seven hours a day doing “non-work”, thanks to staring at some sort of screen. They don’t have friends any more. They don’t go out. They don’t go boozing. As BPAS’s report said: “Getting good grades or succeeding in their chosen career was the top priority for the young people surveyed, with 82 per cent of respondents stating this was of high importance, compared to 68 per cent who felt that spending time with their friends was of high importance.” However, what’s so bad about wanting to get your end away?

Ví dụ
He fought three bouts, winning all, but gave up after realizing "as soon as I met a guy in better shape than me, I'd get my clock cleaned.".

Being fitter and healthier is one thing, but translating these improvements into results is another matter. It’s hard enough to do this in the U.S., but racing in Belgium is brutal, with women scrapping for every position. I’m expecting to get my clock cleaned but to learn from it and become a better racer.

As much as I consider myself a competent individual when it comes to self-defense (tự phòng vệ), I'm going to have to admit I'd get my clock cleaned by nearly every relevant female mixed martial artist there is. While that's somewhat terrifying, it's more of a respect for what they do. The fact that fighters like Ronda Rousey, Gina Carano, Sara Kaufman and Miesha Tate don't receive the same respect for fighting that men do is sickening. Guys, ladies can throw down. Not to mention they aren't too bad to look at.
